WF Inside Story

Perfume’s World Strategy by Open Source Project

On the global site of a popular techno-pop unit Perfume, things like motion-capture data created from their dance moves, free track materials made by their producer Yasutaka Tanaka, and various source codes to utilize those materials are distributed open source. A wide array of movies made using these data has already been released online, creating a big buzz especially due to the enjoyment in the actual process of making and viewing these works. While it must have been tough to clear the artist’s copyright, why and how did they decide on launching such an unprecedented promotion? We talked to the planner/producers of the site Daito Manabe, Satoshi Horii and Hiroyasu Kimura of Rhizomatiks and Shoji Inoda of Perfume’s record label Universal Music.
